Lung cancer resections

Lung cancer surgery is the gold standard treatment for early stage lung cancer and in select cases of isolated pulmonary metastases.  Resections at Murdoch Chest are performed via traditional thoracotomy or state-of-the-art minimally invasive video-assisted thoracoscopy (VATS).

Types of lung resections performed include:

  • Lobectomy – Anatomic removal of a complete lobe of lung
  • Sleeve Lobectomy – Removal of a complete lobe of the lung as well as part of the main airway
  • Pneumonectomy – Complete removal of the lung on one side
  • Wedge Resection – Excision of a small portion of the lung. Often used for small tumours, pulmonary metastases or in patients with severe lung disease

Mediastinal disease (benign and malignant tumours, lung cancer staging)

  • Mediastinoscopy
  • Chamberlain Procedure
  • VATS

Pleural disease (including mesothelioma, empyema and recurrent pneumothorax)

  • Diagnostic VATS
  • Pleurectomy and pleurodesis
  • Empyema decortication

VATS sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
